Cruising Trophies & Other Awards
The Clyde Cruising Club has a wealth of handsome cups and trophies, which are awarded annually for cruising achievements.
These cups and trophies are worthy of the effort or keen competition.
The logs and narratives when printed in the Club journal are of interest and instruction to others. A small independent panel of
judges study all the entries and submissions and make the awards. The Log judges and Journal Editors are currently looking at
the criteria on which prizes are assessed. There may be additional prizes for junior logs and photos and also video logs. The new
criteria will be available this summer on the CCC website www.clyde.org
Awarded for an extraordinary feat of sailing of any kind (ie seamanship, cruising or racing) - at the decision of the Commodore and CCC Committee and annually only if there is a candidate of sufficient merit.
JOHN DOBIE MEMORIAL TROPHY
Awarded to the yacht with the highest achievements in cruising and racing. The John Dobie Memorial Trophy is awarded each year to the best allrounder in the Club. The Trophy was presented in memory of John Dobie. the Club's Honorary Secretary from 1959 to 1964. The object of this award is to encourage participation in both the cruising and racing sides of the Club's activities and the winner must have significant involvement in both of these. It is normally a requirement that competitors shall have entered a log for competition and shall have taken part in the Clubs races.
THE SUNFLOWER SALVER
This salver will be awarded by the Commodore for a cruise of great merit. for an outstanding feat of sailing or navigation or for any other act or service that enhances the reputation of the Clyde Cruising Club.
THE FERRIER SEAMANSHIP TROPHY
This trophy is awarded to a person who is judged to have displayed a responsible attitude to the art of seamanship during the season, either on a particular occasion or over a longer period.
The Cruising Club of America presented this trophy to the Club during the Classic Malts Millennium Cruise. It will be awarded to a member for Blue Water or other long distance voyage, cruise or achievement.
ICC DECANTER, GLENLEE DECANTER AND GLENCAIRN TROPHY
These trophies will be awarded to recognise service to the Club, either on a particular occasion or over a longer period.
MIKE BALMFORTH AWARD
This new award is for extensive navigation & Pilotage in Scotland and/or Northern Ireland developing awareness of the coast on which they were sailing and pushing their experience through the use of a mix of methods with no reliance on one.
CRUISING LOG COMPETITIONS
The Club will award the following trophies for cruises made during the season and supported by a log or a narrative in terms of the requirements set out below.
The best cruise of the season, unrestricted as to duration or size of yacht.
A cruise of merit preferably less than 21 days.
MURRAY BLAIR CHALLENGE TROPHY
Best cruise by a smaller yacht.
The best cruise of the season by a motor yacht, a motor-sailer, or a yacht cruising wholly or mainly under engine.
DONALD MCNAMARA TROPHY
A cruise of merit, unrestricted as to duration or size of yacht, but with no credit given for distance covered under power.
CHRISTIE WATSON TROPHY
Awarded in memory of Frank Christie and Bill Watson and the many cruises of the two families together. The Trophy will be awarded for the best log of two or more yachts cruising in company, or a maritime narrative of merit.
JUNIOR LOG COMPETITIONS
The best log of the season submitted by a junior Member of the Club, Preference will be given to a log of a cruise to the Outer Hebrides.
A log of merit submitted by a junior Member of the Club. When assessing the entries for the Barra and Vatersay Cups. the judges will make allowances for the age of the ]uniors. The judges may award second and third prizes, if the number of entries justifies this.
R G MOWAT MEMORIAL TROPHY
The trophy will be awarded for the best maritime narrative submitted which is aligned with the aims and objectives of the Club. The Editor of the journal will judge the award of this trophy from the contributions that are received.
MICHIE SALVER -- SAILING DIRECTIONS PRIZE
The trophy will be awarded for the best contribution of information for the Sailing Directions. Information for the Editor of the Sailing Directions is best sent by email.
This trophy will be presented to the winner of a cruising competition that is judged solely on the distance a yacht covers during its cruise, anchorages visited and the route taken. Download the 'Anchorages Visited' form from the CCC website www.clyde.org.
JOHN RODGER TROPHY
This trophy was originally presented to the West of Scotland junior Offshore Group in memory of one of its founders to encourage racing between yachtsmen from different parts of the British Isles. The John Rodger Trophy will be awarded to the CCC yacht, which, in the opinion of the Racing Committee, has given the best performance during the season in a racing event out with the Clyde and West Coast of Scotland.
SINBAD FAMILY TROPHY
Past Commodore Bill Strang presented this Trophy for the best family crew in the Tobermory Race. With the increase in family participation in all our inshore races, the Trophy will now be presented to the family crew, which in the opinion of the Racing Committee, has given the best performance over the season in all
the Club's races.
