TRAINING AT BARDOWIE

Sail training will be provided on Tuesday, Wednesday and Friday evenings from 18.30 hrs till dusk, starting in mid April and running till mid September.

Training on Wednesdays and Fridays is aimed at beginners, both children and adults.  Training courses available for children aged 8 to 16 years are RYA Youth Stages 1, 2, 3 and 4.  Stages 1 to 3 are taught in single handed dinghies.  Stage 4, crewing skills, is taught in 2 person dinghies.  Youth Stage 3 is the equivalent of the Adult Level 2 Certificate.   Children who have gained Youth Stage 4 then move to the adult syllabus, Start Racing, Sailing with Spinnakers, Seamanship Skills, Day Sailing.

Adult courses on Wednesdays and Fridays are RYA Levels 1 and 2, RYA Level 1 is designed for beginners, Level 2 is for improvers.  Level 2 is the standard sailors have to achieve before they are permitted to sail unsupervised at Bardowie.

The cost for a beginners training course to members is £35.00.  Logbooks and Handbooks are available for purchase.

Tuesday evenings are devoted to race training.  RYA Start Racing is offered to sailors who have achieved RYA Youth Stage 3 or Basic skills Level 2 (Adult) or have the ability and experience to sail to these standards and above.  In addition to the RYA qualifications, on Tuesday evenings, we run monthly racing modules at a cost of £10.00 per month to offer informal race training to all club members on a turn up and sail basis.  These will take the form of a 30 minute discussion on relevant racing topics followed by a short informal race which will be free to enter for any club member with the basic skills to qualify for Tuesday evening sailing (see above).

Less formal training is provided on Monday evenings, aimed at Improvers, that is members who have achieved Adult Level 2 or Youth Stage 3, who are encouraged to visit the Club, socialise, practice sailing, and improve their sailing skills and techniques in the large variety of club dinghies.  Instructors will be provided to motivate, coach, encourage and assess.  There is no charge for training on Monday evenings, though if you want to be assessed on a module, here is a £10.00 fee to cover the cost of RYA certificates.

Training and assessment in the advanced RYA modules, Sailing with Spinnakers, Seamanship Skills, and Day Sailing will be arranged, at weekends, during the season, depending on demand.

Powerboat training will also be offered on weeknights, dependant on demand and availability of powerboats.

During the school summer holidays, on weekdays, we run 5 day RYA training courses for members.   Application forms can be downloaded from our website.

Note that children of 12 years of age and under must be accompanied by a responsible adult (on shore) at all times.

Please remember that evening training activities are only possible due to the efforts of our volunteer instructors, who turn up regularly, rain or shine, to put something back into the sport.  They need all your encouragement and support.

Please complete the Course application form and send it, along with the course fee, to our Training Secretary, Helen Kirk.

Other Training Courses available include:-

  • Powerboat Certificate

  • Safety Boat Certificate

  • First Aid Certificate

  • VHF Certificate

  • Assistant Dinghy Instructor Course

  • Dinghy Instructor Course

  • Powerboat Instructor Course

Powerboat and First Aid Certificates are pre-requisites for all those who intend to train to become Dinghy and/or Powerboat Instructors, but we would encourage all Stewards at Bardowie to gain these qualifications.

If you are interested in any of these courses, please complete the application form and send it to Helen Kirk.  Courses will be organised to suit demand and course fees will be notified when courses are filled.

Members are reminded that although priority is given to those who have signed up for a training course in the evenings, if you just want to come down for a sail, please discuss your requirements with the Steward and Senior Instructor on the night and they will do their best to accommodate you with the boat of your choice.
