Junior Member's Blog
The Webmaster was taken to task in that there is no section of the Club website where Cadets can spread news of their involvement in Club activities. Well, just to show that the site caters for all ages and to start this section off here is what the crew of Tartan Pimpernel were up to last weekend.
Tartan Pimpernel and the Ladies and Cadet's Race Weekend
Ludovic Howison at the helm of Tartan Pimpernel
Ludovic says:
"The race was great. There were a lot more boats than last year. The beat was good but the run was disappointing because there was not much going on. I was sorry that I couldn't make it to the barbeque on saturday night as I heard the burgers were so nice. I loved the rowing races on the Sunday. It was good to meet up with my friends. I am looking forward to the Tobermory race and the cruise. I hope you guys write stuff on the blog too.
Who else is going on the cruise? Let us know?"
Here is MC for the day John Douglas giving the crew of Zubenubi heart failure for using her as a mark in the rowing race. Use some T-Cut Barrie!
So, Tartan Pimpernel has thrown down the gauntlet to the rest of the younger members of the Club. If
you have something to say or a special cruise or race that you took part in - send an email with details to the
webmaster@clyde.org Pictures are good too!

Scottish Natural Heritage
Basking Shark Hotspots
We have been asked by Scottish Natural Heritage to highlight to our members of two hotspots that have been identified as highly important for basking sharks. These are areas where sharks gather to feed and find potential mates, sometimes occuring in large shoals of up to 100.
Scottish Natural Heritage would like to advise all small commercial and leisure craft users of the likely seasonal (May – October) presence of the basking shark in the waters around Coll, Canna and the Hyskeir islet and warn that it is an offence
- to deliberately or recklessly capture, kill, injure or disturb any basking shark.
- To damage or destroy a breeding site or resting place of any basking shark.
- To deliberately or recklessly harass any basking shark.

MCA - Disposal of Flares
MCA OUTLINE CHANGES IN THE COLLECTION OF TIME EXPIRED PYROTECHNICS
The MCA, with the assistance of the Department for Transport, will continue to accept TEPs from the public; however the collection and disposal service will no longer be undertaken by the Ministry of Defence (MoD) with effect from the 31 March 2010 because of their operational pressures.
The Maritime & Coastguard Agency has awarded a new contract to undertake the collection and disposal of Time Expired Pyrotechnics (TEPs) from its premises. The new contracted service will be phased in from December 2009 with Ramora UK Ltd of Portsmouth. (http://www.ramorauk.com/)
Following recent changes of legislation with regard to the storage and transportation of explosives, MCA premises now require to be brought into line with those changes. This will mean that the number of sites which will be able to accept TEPs will be significantly reduced.
The Agency plan to achieve this by concentrating available resources on 18 sites evenly spaced across the country. Analysis of the quantities of TEPs deposited with the MCA indicate that up to 70% of items find their way to the vicinity of the 18 proposed sites which will accept TEPs.
The following sites have therefore been identified:
Maritime Rescue Co-ordination Centres at
Douglas MacDonald, Head of Environment & Emergency Response Standards said:
"These 18 locations, spaced evenly across the country have been chosen because we believe that they will meet the majority of the public demand and are reasonably accessible. Unfortunately not all sites are manned 24 hours, but full details of locations, contact details and opening times will be posted on our web site http://www.mcga.gov.uk/ as the new service is rolled out. We are also asking the public not to take TEPS to police stations as they have no storage facilities for these items."
